Shogun Japanese Grill and Sushi Bar in Katy serves up a full-service teppanyaki and sushi experience that blends casual dining with interactive grill-side cooking. Located along the busy Katy Freeway corridor, it draws a mix of families, groups of friends, and sushi lovers who appreciate a hands-on meal paired with classic Japanese flavors.

The atmosphere leans toward lively and informal, especially around the hibachi grills where cooks perform while preparing dishes like Teppanyaki Steak, Scallops, and Chicken & Shrimp. The dining area is spacious enough to handle weekend crowds, though some locals note it can feel a bit quiet during lunch hours before the dinner rush. Teppanyaki here caters to diners who enjoy watching their meal being made and customized, although some have mentioned variations in how attentive or interactive the chefs are.

Beyond the grills, the sushi menu offers a broad range of familiar options including popular rolls such as the Shaggy Roll, Crunch Roll served alongside fresh sashimi, and combinations that let you sample a variety of nigiri and maki. Appetizers like Crabmeat Puff or Spicy Garlic Edamame work well as starters or shared bites. For those who prefer a complete meal, the Shogun Bento Boxes provide a balanced mix of teppanyaki vegetables, tempura, soup, and salad, making it a practical choice for lunches or early dinners.

Visitors who enjoy a well-rounded drink menu will find classic cocktails like Mai Tai and Blue Hawaiian, as well as sake and Sapporo beer to complement the seafood and grilled meats. The vibe suits people looking for a fun yet relaxed evening out without formalities—particularly families celebrating special occasions or locals gathering for casual group dinners.

While the food generally receives positive remarks, some patrons have experienced slow seating or service delays during busy times, which can affect the flow of the dining experience. The space occasionally carries faint off-notes near the entrance, something long-time guests have noticed but which doesn't dominate the overall visit. Staff friendliness varies, but many diners enjoy the engaging atmosphere created by the hibachi chefs who combine entertainment with cooking.

Best times to visit are early weekend lunches or weekday evenings when the restaurant is lively but not overwhelmingly crowded. Those who appreciate the spectacle of teppanyaki grilling alongside solid sushi options will find Shogun a fitting spot for casual, interactive dining in the Katy area.

Lunch on Saturday before Christmas tasted great and wasn't crazy crowded. I hope it picks up for dinner so they can stay in business. Great salmon, and the Hibachi skills were solid enough for us. Price $40 each for dinner menu. Could spend more or less as desired.

Food was delicious as always, one of my favorite sushi and hibachi places! This day I was a little disappointed with the service for how long they had us wait to be seated, to how long they took to serve us & it was my youngest daughter birthday and this is the place she chose because she loves the food! Otherwise then that once we did get served everything went smoothly after that and the food was delicious and my favorite sushi rolls is the OMG ROLL & I love the chicken & shrimp hibachi rice as well as their egg rolls!

I took a friend who had never been here, paid for the hibachi grill experience. They seated 2 ladies at our grill and the cook appeared to be more interested in talking to them than doing the normal routine. They also asked him to not to add any butter to the rice and less seasoning on the food. He cooked all the food the same and never asked us how we wanted our food prepared. I was very disappointed with the whole experience. Not sure I'll go back. Used to be one of my favorite places.

Besides there being sewage smell when you walk through the door and the server spilling a glass of water on me it was GREAT! The food was fresh veggies were great. The mushroom soup (i HATE mushrooms) was very delicious and i was surprised. The ginger salad 10/10. My entree was the teriyaki steak with fried rice. All was good. The staff was very friends and "entertaining". Best Hibachi we've found in 5 years.
